Professional:
Rowdy has been working full time in Prevention for the Southwest Behavioral Health Center for just over three years. My favorite subject we teach in prevention is the same subject where I got my start and that’s suicide prevention. I started some time ago as a volunteer teaching the suicide prevention program, Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR). I currently work in building prevention coalitions in the communities of Hurricane, and Hildale. My undergraduate degrees are in Criminal Justice & Sociology, and I am currently working on my graduate degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Behavioral Analysis. I am also part owner of a local indoor shooting range called Rowdy’s Range (way cool name) where I am state certified in teaching Hunters Education as well as the Utah Conceal Carry class. I feel very passionately integrating the QPR training into firearms training.

Ok people, put your ‘fun hats’ on while I tell you about me. I was born and raised in Southern Utah, in the small town of Hurricane (Hurikin). I graduated from Hurricane High School (Go Tigers!), which at times was a struggle because how can they expect you to go to class when there is so other fun stuff to do? Am I right? I grew up on our small family ranch where I learned the value of work and that mom was always right, a lesson my dad struggled with at first but he came around. There was four of us in the family where I was second oldest, the favorite, and not to mention the best looking. It was at a young age our family lost my brother to cancer, something that helped us all understand the value of life and how we should live it and not waste it.
Now I have less hair and I have moved back to the Hurricane valley where I spend my leisure time outside of work with my own family. I have a wife and two kids who keep me laughing. We have the best relationship, they keep me laughing and I teach them patience. It really is a win win situation.
Southern Utah is where I call home. It’s where I find my peace amongst the mountains and desert landscape. It’s where I work with my community to make it just a little better than we found it. Southern Utah is home, I love it here.

Why I chose prevention:
People always ask me, “Why is a gun guy working in prevention?” and the answer for me is simple, it’s about helping. It’s about helping find the resources for the community, but more importantly it’s about helping the youth in that community. When a community has a need there is nothing more satisfying than helping to fill that need.
I found this need one night while I was volunteering to teach a QPR class to a group of people. After the class several people stayed after to talk with me personally. At some point during the class each one of them had recognized a risk factor, a behavior in a family member or a friend that didn’t seem right. They wanted to know more and they wanted to know how to help. As I was listening to each person describe their own story, I realized this is what I wanted to do, this is where I needed to be. It was shortly after that I started with Southwest Behavior Health Center and I haven’t looked back.
I love what I do, I love the people I get to help, and I love to see communities change for the positive. This is why I do this job, this is what has brought me to prevention.
